Maybe this is a bit easier to say because I don’t live in the states, but, don’t worry about accomplishing anything, and don’t worry about freeloading on your parents.
Is it any accomplishment to get a job that you hate, then work to realize the dream of somebody else, and being able to live an average life? Most people accomplish very little, and even then, don’t compare yourself to them, they do what they do, and you should do what you do.. Judge yourself by your own standards, if you feel good doing something, then do it.
My guess is that your parent’s are not looking at you as a load-factor on the household, since you’ve been part of it for the last 18 years anyway.. There’s no shame in “living in your mom’s basement”, be helpful, then you’re not freeloading anymore
Don’t worry about not getting everything from the start.. Most of the people who had the computers like the C64 didn’t become hackers, sure, a higher percentage did, but not the majority.
There’s nothing wrong with using 28 hours a week on your own projects, if you feel like it, use every waking hour if you like, then taking a day off seems like a well-deserved vacation.
I’m with you on the post-copyright era, let’s work together to make that happen ASAP
Freeloading technically mean you’re a burden on somebody else, in other words, a net loss. Some of you may be happy with freeloading not entering the workforce and just going to school. For me, I just want to fly under my own wings, and build a game company to boot.
As for the post-copyright comment, I am glad that somebody shared my sentiment.

Some days ago, somebody on the freegamer channel at irc.freenode.net claim that if people were to translate my pseudonym, kiba into German, it would simply mean cherry-banana. If that is true, than it is harilious!

Via Hacker News, I learned of a cool way to monentize games doing grid computing. Basically you would offer a process that scavenge spare CPUs for research to players who opt in to earn extra cash. You get $2.60 a month per user. Cool!
The free market never cease to amaze me.

Over at the freegamedev.net forum in the business section, there is a guy who got the bright idea of building a FOSS game development incubator, at least that what it seem to be. I would be very interested in investing sometime in the future once they acquired a track record.
I am not expecting that 90% of all game startup to succeed or something, but I feel that the founders/game developers that they fund should be reasonable prospect not people who have outlandish dreams or poor track record.
Speaking of poor track record, that also include me. Although, I think I am getting better on completing game projects and making them well executed.

A ruby guy recommended that I should try out shoulda. So I field tested it the next day. Even though it wasn’t much of a test, I quickly embrace it because it will give documentations and contexts to what my unit test is testing for.
You can get this gem on github but not on rubyforge.

Qubodup did an article on Libre Musics and Tremulous t-shirt.
Although I didn’t like the idea of releasing musics or code to the world as NC only first, I have to say that Paul’s music liberation experiment is encouraging. Apparently, people really do care about true free culture, as much as they care about free software.
The Ministry of Frag sells t-shirt for the Tremulous project and for profit. Unfortunately their one and only product plus the fact that this company started years ago make me not want to touch it even with a ten-foot poles. I want to know if Ministry of Frag is still alive.
If they’re still alive, I want them to sell t-shirts for future projects that at least graduated from beta stage.

Via Hacker News, I found a similar library to EventMachine for networking called reactor. Unfortunately, eventmachine snagged me before this project have a chance.

Mini-devlog: April 13, 2009
I worked on adding capability to change the location of rubytet’s playfield. That mostly occupy me for more than 30 minutes. Then, I worked on rbgooey. I clean up and there and then started work on the template class because all the UI classes have similar structure. I also make use of the new shoulda gem that I mentioned earlier in the mailbag post.
And oh, I just turned 18!
